Trunity Privacy Policy
PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING CAREFULLY. THIS PAGE PROVIDES GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT THE PRIVACY POLICY OF THIS WEBSITE.
IF YOU ARE UNDER 18 YEARS OF AGE, PLEASE BE SURE TO READ THIS PRIVACY POLICY WITH YOUR PARENTS OR GUARDIAN AND ASK QUESTIONS ABOUT THINGS YOU DO NOT UNDERSTAND.
What does the Trunity site do?
The Trunity platform allows educators to customize online digital textbooks, add additional educational content such as assignments, quizzes and exams to the textbook, and makes the resulting integrated course available to their students for use both inside and outside the classroom. Students who use the Trunity platform can interact with the educational content, turn in assignments, take quizzes and exams, and post comments to interact with the teacher and fellow students. In some cases, students or parents may purchase additional content through the Trunity platform, or may access free content provided by Trunity or third parties.
What is the purpose of our privacy policy?
Our privacy policy describes how personal information is collected online from users of the Trunity platform. At this time, Trunity does not allow third parties to collect personal information from our users through the Trunity platform. Trunity does, however, use third party providers to host the Trunity platform and the data collected by the platform.
Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act
Because some of the students who use the Trunity platform may be 13 years of age or younger, this policy also describes how Trunity complies with the Children Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA). Since COPPA applies only in the United States, it is possible that some of the features of the Trunity platform that relate to COPPA requirements may operate differently for users outside of the United States. Trunity does its best to comply with the laws of applicable jurisdictions, including privacy laws.
Trunity is committed to protecting the privacy of children who use our sites and applications. This Privacy Policy explains our information collection, disclosure, and parental consent practices with respect to information provided by children under the age of 13, and is intended to be in compliance with COPPA. For more information about COPPA and general tips about protecting children’s online privacy, please visit OnGuard Online.
Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA)
Trunity is committed to complying with FERPA. All personal information is considered confidential and is protected in compliance with FERPA. Trunity will not provide any personal information to any person, party or organization ineligible to receive such information under FERPA. Trunity does its best to comply with the laws of all applicable jurisdictions, including privacy laws.
What types of information does Trunity collect?
Trunity collects two basic types of information - personal information and anonymous information. In some cases, the platform may combine personal and anonymous information to create a third type of information, aggregate information.
Personal information means information that can identify a user and includes such data as the user’s name, online contact information, screen name, and other information that identifies an individual. Personal information can also include persistent identifiers such as cookies, IP addresses, hardware identifiers, and other identifiers that can uniquely identify a device (i.e. a computer, tablet or cell phone) from which the Trunity platform is being accessed.
Anonymous information is information that does not identify an individual, but is associated with your use of the Trunity platform.
Aggregate information is a combination of personal information and anonymous information.
More specifically, the Trunity platform collects the following:
How the Trunity platform collects your Information.
We collect information you provide to us when you request products, services or information from us, register with us, or participate in activities on our sites and through our applications. For such information, we generally provide an online form requesting the information we need to comply with your request. We can also collect information you provide when you respond to emails or surveys, upload assignments or comments or messages or other content. We can also collect information when you interact with us, such as by sending us an email or requesting help or support.
Please keep in mind that when you provide information to us on a third-party site or platform (for example, when a third party site hosts one of our applications), the information you provide may be separately collected by the third-party site or platform. The information we collect is covered by this privacy policy, and the information the third-party site or platform collects is subject to the third-party site or platform’s privacy practices. Privacy choices you have made on the third-party site or platform will not apply to our use of the information we have collected directly through our applications, and privacy choices you make on our sites will not apply to third party sites.
A list of third party applications that may also collect information from you when you use the Trunity platform is at the bottom of this privacy policy. If you need to contact any third party provider who collects information through the Trunity platform, you may contact us at [email protected] and we will provide you with the contact information you require.
Use of information collection technologies
We also collect information through technologies such as cookies, Flash cookies and Web beacons. Such collection occurs automatically when you visit our sites or use our applications (either on our sites or when those applications are included on third-party sites or platforms).
Using such technology helps us understand how you use the Trunity platform and helps us provide a smoother, more seamless user experience. It also sometimes helps us collect information on what pages students or other users visit, what searches they performed, and which topics they are interested in. In some cases, we may use such information to select content or services you may be interested in based on your interactions with the platform and with other sites.
In addition to information we collect on our site, we also acquire information from other trusted sources to update or supplement the information you provided or we collected automatically. For example, your school may provide us with information about you that we can use to help make it easier for you to access our site. As another example, we may receive lists of data that contain information about you from third parties for marketing purposes or to help us process transactions on our site. Local law may require that you authorize the third party to share your information with us before we can acquire it.
How does Trunity use the information we collect?
Trunity is the data controller for information collected by the Trunity platform, by the Trunity applications (whether hosted on our site or third-party sites), and collected by Trunity from third party sources.
Unless prohibited under applicable law, we use data for the following purposes:
Consistent with local law and choices and controls that may be available to you, we may also use your information to:
Will Trunity Share Your Information with Other?
If you are using Trunity for school assignments, we will provide analytics and other assessment information to your teacher, school or school district. Beyond that, Trunity will not share your personal information except in limited circumstances including:
Lastly, Trunity sometimes uses third party hosting providers to host or process data that may include your information. When we do so, it is often necessary that data, which may include your information, is placed on hardware owned or operated by those third party providers.
Except as set forth above, we exercise commercially reasonable care to not otherwise share or disclose the names of users or any personally identifiable information with third parties, unless we have the prior approval of the user.
Your Controls and Choices
We provide you the ability to exercise certain controls and choices regarding our collection, use and sharing of your information. In accordance with local law, your controls and choices include:
If you have any questions about the information we collect and maintain, or any difficulties with any of the above-listed choices or controls, please email [email protected] and we will try to help.
You can also control our ability to collect information automatically through cookies. To do so, access your browser's settings regarding cookies by selecting "Internet Options" or "Preferences" in the menu bar of your browser. This will allow you to prevent your browser from accepting new cookies, have your browser notify you when you receive a new cookie, or disable cookies altogether. However, because cookies allow you to navigate our sites more easily without having to repeatedly log in using your username and password, and are used to provide certain other features and functionality of our sites, we recommend that you leave them turned on. If you do choose to turn cookies off, certain features of the Trunity platform may not operate correctly.
To the extent we send any emails to our users or others, we will comply with local laws regarding spam. You may request that we do not send you unsolicited emails either by following the “unsubscribe” instructions in the email message itself, or by contacting [email protected].
Child Privacy
PARENTS: We encourage parents and guardians to spend time online with their children (especially children 12 and under) and to participate with your children in the activities that may be offered through our sites and applications. No personally-identifying information should be submitted to or posted on our sites or through our applications by children under 13 without the consent of their parent or guardian. Trunity uses verifiable consent prior to collecting information from children. Types of verifiable consent that we may use include, requesting consent form from the parent or school, requiring the parent to confirm their age with a credit card, or requiring the parent to call us or the school. The exact form of verifiable consent used will depend on the circumstances.
In addition to using our sites and applications with your children, we encourage parents to monitor their Children's online use generally, and to help us protect their privacy by instructing them never to provide personally-identifying information on any website without their parent’s or guardian’s permission.
We are prohibited by law from conditioning a Child's participation in any activity on this website on the Child disclosing more personally-identifying information than is reasonably necessary to participate in such activity.
CHILDREN: Please do not give us your full name, email address, home address, telephone number or any other personally-identifying information that would enable someone to contact you either online or offline, without first asking your parent or guardian for permission.
We understand the need to provide protections for personal information we may collect from children on our sites and through our sites and applications. Where appropriate, some of the features on our sites are not accessible by children and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children from those features.
Where we do intend to collect personal information from children, we take additional steps to protect children’s privacy, such as:
Data Security and Integrity
We are committed to protecting your information from loss, misuse and alteration. We use industry standard security measures to ensure that all data collected is safeguarded. Please note, however, that no data transmission or storage can be guaranteed to be 100% secure and no server or data center can ever be invulnerable to all attacks. If we determine that any of your information has been accessed improperly, we will notify you (or if you are a child, we will notify your parent or guardian) as required by law.
Data Transfers, Storage and Processing
We may transfer your personal information to schools, administrators, school districts, vendors or other third parties for the purposes described in this privacy policy. If we do so, we will take reasonable steps to safeguard the privacy of your personal information wherever your information is transferred, stored and/or processed by us.
Changes to this Privacy Policy
This privacy policy may be revised in the future to meet the needs of new technologies, changes in industry standards or laws, or new services provided by Trunity. We will notify you of any changes to this privacy policy as required by law. To the extent we are not required by law to notify you of changes in our policy, you should review this policy regularly to make sure you are up to date with any changes.
In the event that we add new third parties that we allow to collect personal information through our site(s) or application(s), we will add them to the list below.
