Introduction to Biology for Students Majoring in Other Fields - Now Available for 2014-2015 School Year
Portsmouth, NH – (Marketwired) – July 29, 2014 – Trunity, a pioneer of eLearning technology that transforms the educational experience, is pleased to announce the publication of “Life on this Rock, 3rd Edition,” a digital textbook authored on the Trunity eLearning Platform by Thomas B. Shea, PhD, Professor of Biological Sciences and Director of the Center for Cellular Neurobiology and Neurodegeneration Research at the University of Massachusetts/Lowell (UMass/Lowell).
Life on this Rock is an introductory biology digital textbook designed for students majoring in other fields of study. The book utilizes the power of the Trunity eLearning Platform’s rich multi-media capabilities, tools for student and instructor customization, and anywhere/anytime access to bring biology to non-science college students worldwide. In addition, it features self-assessment questions that enhance learning outcomes; the ability to highlight and annotate text; an online glossary integrated into the text; over 250 illustrations; highlights of “real world” applications of key principles; and 700 PowerPoint slides. Over 1,500 students are expected to download Life on this Rock from the Trunity Knowledge Exchange in the 2014-2015 school year.
Students and instructors will benefit from Dr. Shea’s 20+ years of experience in the college classroom, where he mastered the art of teaching science to undergraduates not majoring in the subject. He begins Life on this Rock explaining how the “Scientific Method” is not just an academic exercise confined to a laboratory, but instead is a universal approach that can be applied to other fields and everyday life, such as critiquing a business plan or analyzing a contract. Each subsequent chapter builds upon the previous one, guiding the student from a simple, yet complete, investigation of molecules that explain how organisms live and reproduce, and ultimately how all life forms are interconnected and share resources on the Earth. Life on this Rock enables students, regardless of their prior exposure to science, to gain a critical understanding of aspects that affect their lives now and will continue to do so in the future, including:
“Teaming with Trunity to publish Life on this Rock on their highly dynamic eLearning platform has served to change the way I intend to approach all my future writing projects, and how I will engage my students in the classroom. I am hopeful that science teachers worldwide will choose my textbook as a key element of their classroom curriculum so that they and their students can also experience the Trunity-way of teaching and learning. It truly represents a profound and transformative change to traditional pedagogy and makes me very excited to be a teacher in today’s advanced technology-enabled education industry,” stated Dr. Shea.
Cutler Cleveland, Chief Education Officer of Trunity, added, “We are pleased to count Tom Shea, a distinguished author, teacher and researcher, as a Trunity author. We believe that Life on this Rock will quickly become a leading title in one of higher education’s largest and most important fields. It is the latest in a rapidly expanding library of educational content being created and experienced on the Trunity eLearning Platform.”
Dr. Shea earned a Ph.D. in Biology from Northeastern University after completing his undergraduate and graduate studies in Biology at the University of Massachusetts in Boston. In addition to authoring Life on this Rock, his ongoing research activities have led to the publication of more than 60 scientific reports and 300 peer-reviewed papers. He routinely presents seminars and workshops for the Massachusetts/New Hampshire Alzheimer’s Associations, as well as at international scientific meetings, on how nutrition and supplements may maintain and improve brain function despite the normal cognitive decline caused by aging.
As Director of the Center for Cellular Neurobiology and Neurodegeneration Research at UMass/Lowell, Dr. Shea’s research efforts focus on the roles played by axonal cytoskeletal proteins in nervous system development, and in the etiology of Alzheimer's and other related neurodegenerative diseases.
